UCD overall winners at 2019 University Championships

UCD Mens and Ladies Boat Clubs combined to take home the overall prize at the University Championships in Lough Rynn while the men also picked up the Wylie Cup for a 20th time.

The UCD Boat Club Centenary Trophy was originally presented by Old Collegians to the overall winner in 2017 but this is the first time UCD took it home themselves.

The result was due to a tremendous effort from the entirety of both squads with UCD’s athletes finding success in races at all levels from Novice to Senior. In determining the overall winner, points are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes in all events. At the end of racing UCD and NUIG were level on points with the tie breaker being which University had more wins – UCD had 7 and NUIG 6.

There was good variety to the wins, picking up all of the fours events and each of the Mens Senior sweep races. The total tally for UCD was Mens Senior 8+, Mens Senior 4-, Mens Senior 2-, Mens Intermediate 4+, Mens Club 4+, Mens Novice 8+, Womens Novice 8+ along with a number of 2nd and 3rd place finishes.

A massive thank you is also due to the the countless volunteers who made the event possible with their dedication and hard work, among them several UCD members. From regatta coordinator Shauna Fitzsimons to boat safety checkers, it was the effort of these volunteers which allowed the event to run so smoothly.

After a number of years of falling short, our reserve boat has brought the Naggon Cup back to UCD. This win is a reflection of the growth in our squad depth, and a foundation to build on as we set our sights on the upcoming races over the next few weeks.#honcollege #adastra #coloursboatraces

On its 21st edition, UCDBC have reclaimed the Dan Quinn Shield, ending a six-year drought since our last victory in 2018. Through an outstanding performance from our novice squad, the Shield has returned back to Belfield! 🏆🔵Novice rowing is key to what we do at UCDBC. A club of our ambition is only as strong as the next generation it builds, and we take enormous pride in welcoming, developing, and inspiring new rowers each and every year. Today’s result is a testament to the dedication of this year’s novice squad and the coaches who have worked tirelessly to bring out the best in them. This achievement would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors and partners:Dublin City Council Gannon + Associates Landscape ArchitectureValentia PartnersTechretePaul RomerilSL RacingMurray Consultants📸 Photos courtesy of @tjobrienpifer frankiedolphin @vaarjak @sportsfile #HonCollege #AdAstra #ColoursBoatRaces
