Novices

University rowing is a unique proposition – a fresher with the right attributes and mindset, but who has never set foot in a boat, can join the Boat Club and over the course of an undergraduate degree in UCD become a seasoned international athlete, competing at the highest level.

Many of our most successful novices come from other sports and are looking to try something new in college, for others it is their first full training programme. What they all have in common is the willingness to work hard within a team.

Being tall helps but rowers come in all shapes and sizes. On the other hand if you are small and light you may be interested in becoming a cox, who steers the boats and motivates the rowers.

Usually the best time to join the Boat Club as a novice is during Freshers Week at the start of the first semester – just call to our stand and talk to one of our members. You will start alongside other beginners and progress together under our expert coaches towards the Colours race against Trinity, University Championships and National Championships.

2020/21: Given that the restrictions in place prevent a physical Freshers Week you can email [email protected] with any questions about joining the club.

UCD Boat Club

The club is truly shocked and saddened with the passing of Jonathan Devitt.

Johnny made an enormous contribution to the club, not least as Captain in 2002 and 2003. He created foundations that the club still builds on today and it was fitting that he received a Centenary Medal in recognition of this in 2017.

We offer our most sincere condolences to his wife Caroline, his family, his crew mates and all who knew him.
