UCD Boat Club achieved a significant milestone in 2017, marking a centenary of national and international titles, of World and Olympic Irish representation, and of countless lasting bonds and friendships forged on the water.

This milestone presents all members, past and present, with an opportunity to come together, celebrate the club’s illustrious history and lay the foundation for another century of success.

What is needed?

Staff

University rowing, both in Ireland and abroad, is becoming increasingly professional in its approach. UCD Boat Club has been extremely fortunate to have dedicated volunteer coaches and committees throughout its history but now to grow, compete and succeed consistently at the highest level the club requires a full-time professional structure that provides the strong and stable platform from which athletes and volunteers can excel.

Equipment

In 2017 the club began the process of regenerating a fleet that ranged from 10 to 20+ years with the purchase of a new 8+ but considerable and continued investment is needed to support the dedication of our athletes and their ability to compete at the top level.

Support

The club currently relies on a small number of volunteers generously giving a substantial amount of time and energy to coaching and administrative tasks. We also have a large group of alumni who may not be in a position to support the club financially but can instead lend their skills, sporting or otherwise. We believe that with the right structure more individuals can get involved and widen our support network.

How can I help?

Donate

The most straightforward way to support these ambitions is to sign up for a regular donation to the UCD Boat Club Graduate Fund at UCD Foundation. Established in 2001, the Graduate Fund aims to ensure that the club always has the means necessary to compete at the top level.

Donations made in this way are deemed charitable and are therefore tax-efficient – if you are a PAYE or self-assessed tax payer and donate at least €250 per annum (€21 a month) the Foundation can claim tax relief on your amount, i.e. your donation could be worth an extra 44.93% to the club.

By donating regularly you are contributing to a solid foundation that ensures the future sustainability of the club.

Get Involved

The club has an ongoing need for volunteers. This can take the form of coaching or committee roles, with varying levels of time commitment, or more specific support in areas such as:

  • Employment (flexible jobs are a huge help to athletes, particularly in Summer)
  • Fundraising (organising an event or making contact with potential sponsors)
  • Race Day (providing food or driving a trailer, bus or car)

This is a fantastic way to stay connected with and support the club without the time commitment associated with a day-to-day role.

UCD Boat Club

The club is truly shocked and saddened with the passing of Jonathan Devitt.

Johnny made an enormous contribution to the club, not least as Captain in 2002 and 2003. He created foundations that the club still builds on today and it was fitting that he received a Centenary Medal in recognition of this in 2017.

We offer our most sincere condolences to his wife Caroline, his family, his crew mates and all who knew him.
