Gannon Cup for U.C.D.

U.C.D. confirmed their Head of the Liffey form when winning the boat race for the Gannon Cup over the Guinness Wharf-Butt Bridge, Lower Liffey course, yesterday when beating Dublin University by two-thirds of a length.

Dublin University led from the start and were a canvas ahead after forty strokes. U.C.D., however, had at this stage their boat moving smoothly, and, with stroke Paul Crowley setting a rate of about 36, and Tom Sullivan (No. 7) and former stroke, Barry Doyle (No. 6) taking his rate to perfection, the rest of the crew were in a position to “sit up” and get the very best out of every blade full.

They drew level before the half-way mark and from then on steadily forged ahead. However, they were never in a position to rest on their lead as Dublin University, in their usual fashion, fought it out to the bitter end.

The score in the race, which was started in 1947, now reads: Dublin University, 6 wins; U.C.D., 5. There was a dead-heat in 1950, and no race in 1957-’58.

Result – U.C.D. (A.J. Carty (bow), H. G. Buckley, J. J. O’Sullivan, D. McCann, B. Hamilton, Barry Doyle, Tom Sullivan, P. J. Crowley (stk.), B. Clarke (cox) bt. Dublin University (P. Reynolds (bow), R. McGoodbody, R. L. Longfield, M. D. Duncan, S. S. Newman, W. D. Keating, P. D. Martin, F. G. D. Tisdall (stk.), N. D. Gillett (cox). 2/3rds of a length.

Commentary of boat race

The inter-Varsity boat race for the Gannon Cup, between Trinity College and University College, Dublin, on the Liffey yesterday had an unexpected military touch.

Seven walkie-talkie units, manned by F.C.A. personnel stationed on bridges between Sean Heuston Bridge and Butt Bridge kept officials in touch with the race.
