President’s Message regarding Henley Royal Regatta

Hello All,I have some disappointing news and some positive news regarding Henley 2008. The UCD VIII which was entered in the Temple Challenge Cup has been withdrawn from this year’s Regatta. Also, Helen Walshe who was entered in the Princess Royal has succumbed to a long-standing injury and has had to withdraw.

We were delighted that based on the excellent results both at home and in the UK, the UCD VIII went straight into the draw without having to qualify. Unfortunately, we have picked up two medical setbacks in the VIII in recent weeks. The Stroke has picked up an injury and the 5 man an illness. Whilst there is a relatively big squad in UCD this year, the other oarsmen eligible for the Temple that could come into the crew are not currently at the standard we require to compete properly at this level.

Clearly the health and well-being of the crew comes first. Whilst we hope that both oarsmen recover in time for the Championships, (possibly Henley itself in the Stroke’s case), the decision was taken to withdraw the crew before today. A fully fit crew from another Club may now benefit from going straight into the main draw without having to qualify. The decision to withdraw the entry was only taken after extreme consideration, however we believe that this is the correct course of action for the benefit of all concerned. UCDBC holds Henley Royal Regatta and all aspects of the event in the highest regard and we look forward to returning to the Regatta and competing at the highest level possible.

Whilst this is a disappointment, it should not impact on the great momentum and spirit that this year’s successes to date have generated both on and off the water. The renewed interest and support currently being received by UCDBC from OC’s, alumni, College and friends has been fantastic and we hope that it continues and thus aids the further development of the Club.

OCBC – Henley entries.
Sean Jacob is entered in the Diamonds and we believe that he has a serious chance of doing well. He is likely to be one of the top scullers in the event.
Diarmaid MacColgain, also OCBC, who is based in London is rowing the 2x as London Rowing Club.
We also wish the UCD Ladies the best in their campaign to qualify for the Remenham Cup.

We apologise to anybody who had planned to go to Henley solely to support the UCD VIII but we hope that Sean and Diarmaid give you something to cheer about long into the weekend. Please give the lads the best support you can.

Best Wishes to all,
Murrough O’Brien
