UCD 2nd Best

Trinity deservedly reclaimed the Gannon Cup in perfect conditions last Saturday.  It was a classic Colours encounter with Trinity taking the advantage from the off and then extending their slim lead following a strong push past the Four-Courts.  UCD struggled to find top gear. The verdict was ¾ of a length by the finish on a much shortened course. While College will rue the missed opportunity for a hat-trick of Gannon Cup wins, the spectators were appreciative of such a good race.

Most of the lads didn’t have much luck that night either . . . . but hopefully a re-jigged crew will manage to rediscover the speed produced during their training camp and produce a fast row on the Tideway course this weekend.  The crew will be coxed by tideway veteran Tom Mulqueen and they will be looking to put the frustrations of last weekend behind them as they start off in 25th position overall and first of the Irish crews in London HOR.  We wish the lads well for the day and hope they can produce the goods in front of our sponsor UBS Warburg.  The odds are in their favour for a result that night too considering all the English lads will be in Dublin for the rugby.  C’mon college . . . and c’mon Ireland.

The Novice Colours race in Islandbridge was an even tighter affair with the two crews level rowing past Neptune boat-house; the tenacious College crew, who led out of the white-house bend on the North station, managed to hold onto their smooth technique as they upped the rates to 41 to win by half-a-canvas at the wire.  Well done College, we look forward to more exciting races and we of course applaud their coaches Jim Kenneally, Ritchie Harnett and John Walsh for their much valued time and commitment.
