The club depends on financial support to maintain its position at the pinnacle of Irish rowing. There are two main ways in which contributions can be made towards furthering the development of the boat club, the graduate fund and by direct sponsorship of the club or an event.
UCDBC Graduate Fund
The UCD Boat Club Graduate Fund was established in 2001 by 3 former captains of the Boat Club. The Trustees of the Fund are all former Captains and rotate on a first in first out basis every three years to keep the fund-raising, account sign-ups & ideas fresh.
The fund has two main goals:
- To ensure that the Boat Club always has the means necessary to stay competing at the highest level.
- To help make improvements to the boathouse at Islandbridge.
Since it has been established, the fund has been used to supplement the income of the club to facilitate equipment and boat upgrades as well as their increasingly expensive trips abroad to race in events such as Henley Royal Regatta, London Head of the River, Ghent, Amsterdam and Boston. In more recent times the fund has contributed to the purchase of a new jeep which was well overdue.
As rowing has a relatively small population in the university it is very difficult to get large numbers to sign up. Instead the current strategy is for each Trustee to contact all of the members from their era in the club and to try and get each era to “give back what it got out”. We try to get at least 10 sign ups every year which may not sound like a lot to many people but all we want is “a little, often”! Most of our contributors are based in Ireland however we currently have subscribers in both the UK and the USA, so there is no excuse not to contribute!

The fund itself is administered by the UCD Foundation who passes the contributions on to the club after they have claimed back the tax. The UCD Foundation Ltd is an approved body within the meaning of Section 848A and Schedule 26A of the Taxes Consolidation Act (TCA) 1997. If the donor is Irish and a PAYE taxpayer, UCD Foundation Ltd will claim back the tax on any donations of €250 or more over the course of the next tax year. The Foundation also uses local laws in the UK and USA to run tax efficient contribution schemes.
If you are interested in contributing to the fund or have any opinions or experiences worth sharing on raising funds for our club please do not hesitate to contact us:
