UCD Boat Club achieved a significant milestone in 2017, marking a centenary of national and international titles, of World and Olympic Irish representation, and of countless lasting bonds and friendships forged on the water.
This milestone presents all members, past and present, with an opportunity to come together, celebrate the club’s illustrious history and lay the foundation for another century of success.
What is needed?
University rowing, both in Ireland and abroad, is becoming increasingly professional in its approach. UCD Boat Club has been extremely fortunate to have dedicated volunteer coaches and committees throughout its history but now to grow, compete and succeed consistently at the highest level the club requires a full-time professional structure that provides the strong and stable platform from which athletes and volunteers can excel.
At the 2016 National Championships UCD Boat Club had two crews in the Top 4 of the Men’s Senior 8+, with both beating the top crews from Queens, Trinity and UCC. UCD’s 2nd crew raced in a 12 year old boat, a decade older than their opposition’s. It is testament to the continued care shown to equipment and to the talent of the crew, but also a strong reminder that the club needs considerable and continued investment in our fleet to support the dedication of our athletes and their ability to compete at the top level.
The club currently relies on a small number of volunteers generously giving a substantial amount of time and energy to coaching and administrative tasks. We also have a large group of alumni who may not be in a position to support the club financially but can instead lend their skills, sporting or otherwise. We believe that with the right structure more individuals can get involved and widen our support network.
How can I help?
The most straightforward way to support these ambitions is to sign up for a UCD Boat Club regular donation at UCD Foundation.
Donations made in this way are deemed charitable and are therefore tax-efficient – if you are a PAYE or self-assessed tax payer and donate at least €250 per annum (€21 a month) the Foundation can claim tax relief on your amount, i.e. your donation could be worth an extra 44.93% to the club.
By donating regularly you are contributing to a solid foundation that ensures the future sustainability of the club. To encourage and reward this work by our supporters, the Foundation will match the first €10,000 of donated funds. Combined with tax relief, your donation can be boosted significantly, your €250 donation could be worth up to €612 to the club.
Within the fund the two key objectives are securing the funds required for a full-time staff member, a position that will be joint funded with UCD Sport, and gathering the necessary outlay to begin the rejuvenation of our fleet. Its long term strategy is the implementation of a capital replacement plan that sees equipment renewed while it still retains appreciable value, allowing the fleet to remain current while minimising the lump sum financing required.

The club has an ongoing need for volunteers. This can take the form of coaching or committee roles, with varying levels of time commitment, or more specific support in areas such as:
- Employment (flexible jobs are a huge help to athletes, particularly in Summer)
- Fundraising (organising an event or making contact with potential sponsors)
- Race Day (providing food or driving a trailer, bus or car)
This is a fantastic way to stay connected with and support the club without the time commitment associated with a day-to-day role.
