Claire Lambe

Claire Lambe

Claire is a Mechanical Engineering graduate of UCD and the UCD Ad Astra Elite Athlete Programme.

In her time at UCD, Claire stroked the Corcoran Cup crews at Colours 2009 and 2010 and went on to stroke and win the Intermediate 4+ and Intermediate 8+ at the 2009 National Championships.

The following season saw her part of the crew that captured the Senior 8+ at University Championships before she turned her attention to sculling on the National squad. Claire continued to represent UCD in her sculling efforts and won Silver at the World University Championships in 2012 and the Senior 1x National Championship in her final year at UCD.

Claire has been part of Ireland's top lightweight women's boat for the last six years. Last year Claire was part of the crew that, for the first time in Irish rowing history, qualified a Iightweight women's boat for the Olympic Games.

The effort put into Claire's journey to Rio is best described by Claire herself in her 2013 TEDxUCD talk.

Earlier this year, Paul Kimmage met Claire and other Rowing Ireland squad members and wrote "there is nothing so pure as a rower's love for rowing".

Paul's skills were honed as a Junior in Skibbereen Rowing Club and he has progressed from strength to strength since, adding a Senior 8+ University Championship for UCD in 2013 to his list of achievements.

Aside from a phenomenal race at the 2015 World Rowing Championships to qualify for Rio, other highlights include a 4th place finish in the LM1x at the 2014 World Rowing Championships. More of Paul's achievements are on the Ad Astra website.

UCD Boat Club has a long history of international representation¬†and 2016 is set to be another proud Olympics for the club with¬†Claire Lambe and Paul O’Donovan qualified in the LW2x (with Sinead Lynch) and LM2x (with his brother Gary) respectively.

Their hard work and dedication is a shining example to a generation of rowers that aspire to their level.

They are currently deep into extensive preparations for Rio that will take them across the world for training camps and buildup races. While some funding is available towards this, the athletes themselves do still pay a substantial amount personally towards this preparation.
