While our returning athletes are well into their training routine, Freshers Week brought the UCD Sports Expo and the first major event of the season. The club signed up a large and enthusiastic group of new members and was awarded by UCD Sport and Bank of Ireland for their contribution to the Expo.
UCD Ad Astra student Paul O’Donovan topped off an outstanding season by winning the LM1x at the 2016 World Championships in Rotterdam, while UCD’s David O’Malley and Shane Mulvaney finished 4th in the U23 LM2- and Shane O’Connell 5th in the U23 LM4x.
UCD took 2016 National Championships for Mens Club 8+, Womens Senior 4- and Womens Intermediate 8+ but were pipped to the line in Mens Senior 8+ and Mens Intermediate 4+, while also finishing 2nd in Mens Senior 1x, Mens Senior 2-, Mens Intermediate 8+.
UCD were knocked out of the 2016 Temple Challenge Cup by American crew Drexel University at Henley Royal Regatta.
UCD’s Club and Intermediate crews had a successful weekend at Cork Regatta, taking home wins for Intermediate 8+, Intermediate 4+ and Club 2 8+, while our scullers picked up Senior 1x and Senior 4x- titles.
UCD alumni Claire Lambe and Sinead Lynch continued their recent improvement in a record breaking LW2x race while UCD Ad Astra student Paul O’Donovan and his brother Gary again showed their speed in the LM2x.
A number of athletes from UCD are named in the crews provisionally nominated by Rowing Ireland for competition at U23 World Rowing Championships in August and World University Rowing Championships in September.
