Well a month into the regatta season and not too many results to report.
The Neptune/Commercial regatta weekend pretty much came and went without much success.
NUIG took home the Wylie this year after winning the Senior and Novice races at the Uni Champs in Castlewellan. Their success in the senior race ensured that they held onto the cup for a 2nd successive season regardless of their controversial victory in the Novice category. The very experienced NUIG Novice crew held off a courageous College to win by a length. Although we were on the wrong side of the result, the lads can take plenty of confidence from this race . . . . another solid stepping stone on the way to the champs etc. There is a lot of promise to this group as they again proved more than capable of producing a performance when it mattered most.
At Queen’s Regatta the Senior 4 ,with Robbie Renehan setting the rhythm followed by Brian O’Connell, Niall McDonnell and Johnny Devitt, couldn’t quite manage to haul back a strong Queen’s four who led the UCD crew by half a length the whole way down the course.
With the exam season upon us, Trinity Regatta promises to be a mute affair for the UCD crews . Nonetheless, there is more to Trinity Regatta than skimming medals across the weir and so it should be a good night out as all of us not bothered with maintaining UCD’s high standard of academic excellence (insert guffaw here) plunder our chums on the south bank. The civilised folk know to expect the riff-raff right?
